Advanced PM Motor Characterization

UTS was retained by Vencore a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Kennedy Space Center (KSC) contractor to support the Orion Service Module Umbilical (OSMU) program, which has been installed on to the Launch Equipment Test Facility (LETF) at KSC, see link: (https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2015/07/first-sls-umbilical-testing-letf/). UTS is working with the motor manufacturer Enertrac (Farmingdale, NY) and NASA/Vencore personnel to dyno test the motor, create a motor controller calibration file and support the test rig setup at KSC. UTS was able to apply its knowledge in electric vehicle inverters power systems to develop a test regime to tune the advanced Enertrac Permanent Magnet motor to work with a Sevcon motor controller for impulse operation on the NASA OMSU. This advanced program combined many UTS skills with an extended R&D and optimization program with a number of partners. In addition, it has expanded UTS’s capabilities in dynamometer testing for rotating machines.
