Electric Mucker
UTS under contract to Highland Machine and Crown Battery has participated in the design, build and deployment mining equipment. UTS’s prime responsibility was to lead the Energy Storage System (ESS) design and build effort. The battery selected for the program is SoNICK manufactured by FIAMM. Its Sodium Nickle Chloride chemistry is well suited high energy applications based on high its 114 Wh/Kg energy density. UTS lead the effort to suggest a number of overall enclosure designs and collect data from the conventional Diesel vehicle in order to gain a shock and vibration baseline for the vehicle. The upfront effort resulted in an overall ESS structure and new isolation mounting system that helps the SoNICK battery withstand up to 20g shock loading in sever hard-rock mining applications. After 12 months in operation, the battery was able to perform it operation with no failures resulting from shock loading or vibration. UTS also lead the effort to design the low (24VDC) and high voltage (600VDC) electrical system within the ESS. Using Solidworks Electrical, out team designed the schematics and harnesses, procured/built the hardware and did the installation. A subsequent mining program was completed with Highland Machine here UTS was able to further optimize and cost reduce the electrical system.
